1v1's Avoid The Smash - Training, January, 5th

I) Individual Technical Development- Dribbling Grids
20 min total- 5 min each activity

  1. Fast footwork with tick tock (3 tick tocks then the move)
  2. Fast footwork with no tick tock
  3. Straight ahead dribbling (move every 3 touches)
  4. Moves in open grid (move every 5 seconds)

II) 1v1 To Open Corner In Tight Grid
10 min

Set Up

  • 10x10 yd grid
  • Three players per grid
  • 2 attackers start in opposite corners and each have a ball
  • 1 defender starts in the middle

Procedure

  • Defender pressures one of the attackers as the attacker dribbles at the defender
  • The attacker does a move and goes to one of the three open spaces
  • The next attacker dribbles at the defender, does a move, and goes to an open space
  • Switch defenders every minute

Key Points

  • Have your head up and be looking around, not just straight ahead
  • Speed variation is the key (slow slow- fast)
  • Different set ups (inside- straight ahead)
  • Recognize where the best place to beat the defender is
    • Going by them
    • Going to the side
    • Going back where you came from
  • Defenders must work hard

III) 1v1 To 2 Goals With A Support Option To Avoid The Smash
20 min

Set Up

  • Two teams: Red Defense, Blue Offense with soccer balls
  • Field is 10x15 yards with 2 goals on one end line

Procedure

  • The blue attacker dribbles the ball and attempts to beat the red defender through either of the two flag goals on the opposite end line
  • If the blue attacker cannot beat the red defender across the end line, she can turn back towards her own line and pass the ball to the next attacker
  • Once the ball is passed the next defender steps out to defend the new attacker

Make It Competitive

+1 point for dribbling the ball through one of the goals

+1 point if the defending team wins the ball and completes a pass to the next player in her line

Key Points

  • Recognize how to beat the defender going forward
  • Recognize when you cannot beat the defender and keep the ball

IV) 4v4 Scrimmage

If we have enough for 5 teams, the team that is out will rotate in every 2 minutes for the team who has scored the least amount of goals.
