UST Training: Pattern Play

I. 7v7 With Wingers to 6 Goals

Set Up

  • Two teams of 6 players with 2 neutral wingers
  • There is a channel that the wingers must stay in

Key Ideas

  • Know where you are going before you get the ball
  • Move the ball up or across a level
  • Recognize when and how to play the ball to the wingers
  • Forward movement to get the ball both into space and at their feet

II. Attacking Half Pattern Play

  • Do each pattern for 5 minutes on each side of the field
  • Have two sets of the pattern working at the same time on each half of the field
  • Be specific with everyone's movement, especially with the players who are not receiving the pass
  • High work rate to re-set the pattern each time- the 5 minutes should be done at an intense pace when re-setting the pattern
  • Begin to work with forwards and center mids on runs into the box when we get end line for a service.  Make sure their is depth in our runs, the runs are setting players up to score, and we have sharp finishes.

A. Outside back- Outside mid into space

B. Outside back- Outside mid feetIII. 7v7 With Wingers to 6 Goals

  • 2x5 minute games

Key points

  • Concentrate on finding the wingers
  • Begin to look at the forwards movement off of the wingers
  • Move the ball across the levels if we cannot find the wingers

IV. Attacking Half Pattern Play

As the defending team begins to take away the pass to the winger we need to hit our forwards with the pass.  If we have not understood the first two patterns review those and bring this pattern in tomorrow.

C. Outside back- forward- CM- OM in space

V. 11v11 Scrimmages

  • Play 3x6 minute games
VI. Defending Corner Kicks
