Sereno Soccer Classic - Day 2

Morning started with the girls artsying up their MTA tryout t-shirts in a team bonding event.
Then most went off to tour a ghost town and some mine somewhere, I stayed back at the hotel to catch up on some work.
I headed out to the fields a little before 1PM to catch the other two teams in our group as they squared off for their first group game. Cerritos Regional Soccer Club (CRSA) Infinity and host club Sereno SC 97 White.
CRSA Infinity
Team Formation 4-3-3
CRSC plays with a very deep sweeper and central point forward. The team is technical but will not stop us from scoring.
Danger Players
#14 point forward - tall, lanky, technical
#5 left forward - small and quick, very technical
Notes
Long throw ins in their attacking third that caused trouble for Sereno
Minimal wide play, most attacks up the middle and through #14
CRSC looked a solid team. Some lack of organization in the back, relying heavily on the athleticism of their central deep sweeper. We'll need to be aware of #14 up top, but I don't see CRSC keeping us off the scoreboard.
Sereno SC 97 White
Team Formation 4-3-3
Flat back four, 3 central mids, 3 forwards with very wide wingers who stayed wide.
Danger Players
#10 and #27 both played center forward. #10 was quick and technical and #27 was big and strong, left footed.
#13 - long throw ins
Notes
Very wide forwards though still not a ton of dangerous flank play
Scored from a well hit free kick from 35 which floated over the CRSC GK from #11
GK struggled to hit her goal kicks far
It was a decent game, with Cerritos pressing early and Sereno scoring against the run of play in the first half off a set piece. Sereno settled in well though and pressed in the second half, with CRSC (#14) scoring in the dying seconds of the game, again against the run of play.
Both teams are solid and will be good games for us. I think we'll score goals against both teams and the results will come if we defend well.

Against MSC for our first game, I opted to start in our 4-4-2 formation.
We came out strong. MSC played a flat back four pressed high up the field, leaving a ton of space behind the defenders for us to try and exploit.
8 minutes in, B-Money (RM) received a pass near midfield, took her marking defender on 1v1, and pressed up the right flank. She neared the endline after her long run and pulled a low cross back across the face of goal. Payt (LF) arrived a little early and over ran the ball by a step. She stopped quickly and got a touch on the ball, then, with her back facing the goal, spun and hit the ball home with her left foot. Good start.
We continued to press forward, missing 2 breakaways by shooting the ball wide.
25 minutes in, Babes (RF) and Dog (LF) combined at the top of the box, sending Babes in to goal. She hammered the ball into the upper corner of the net with a terrific left foot finish.
First half ended 2-0 with us firmly in control of the match.
Three minutes into the second half we tallied our third as Babes' cross from the right flank squirted free under a diving CRSC GK and trickled over the goal line.
Two minutes later Babes completed her hatrick after Mickey (LiM) played a great Slotted Through Pass into the space behind the CRSC defenders, sending Babes on a breakaway.
With 15 minutes left we gave up a goal that I hope won't be critical. Some defensive lapses and missed clearances, a tall, lanky MSC forward pounced on the loose ball and hit a spectacular half volley from 18 yards out that Phi Phi (GK) had no chance to touch.
Why might that be critical? We're playing a 10 point system. 6 for a win, 3 for a tie, 0 for a loss. 1 point per goal up to 3, and 1 point for a shut out. That means we ended our first day with 9 points in a tough group. Will the lack of a shutout point come back to haunt us?

Left the fields to head up to Scottsdale for a team BBQ at Gia's grandparents' home. Girls were in high spirits after the first game and the mood was light. Loved to see some of the bonding and non-soccer characters come to life during the evening's dance offs!
Back to the hotel in time for curfew, looking forward to what tomorrow would bring for the group.
